excursions: **FORTHCOMING EVENT**  Romania

*** Postponed indefinitely ***

A New Year, a new start, a new plan.  Romania.

I'd heard Dick talking about Romania for some time now but never really gave it much thought as he cna talk quite a bit sometimes and not mean anything by it.  I was then invited out for a 'curry night' and it soon became apparent that I'd heard all this talk before.  Last time I'd heard the talk was about a place called Poland.  Hmmm.

View of CalimanestiSo, a plan was born, we're off to Romania.  First thought's are a place in central Romania called Calimanesti.  It's not going to be a hardcore, mud-plugging, 'destroy your motor' expedition but more of a get out and see the country using a 4x4 to get to places you couldn't in your family saloon - in keeping with the whole greenlaneguide philosphy.  Obviously we're still in the preliminary stages of the excursion but as we find out more and more I'll endevour to post it here to keep everyone up to date.

Circumstances change and I'm getting older. I'm driving the Discovery that contains the donor engine for the 110 and ther's so much work still to be done on the other Discovery to get it up to scratch. So I've decided to bite the bullet postpone the trip indefinitely. I will update this entry as soon as things change.

Needless to say nothing has happened on the planning stages as none of the delegated people below has done anything towards organising this trip. As soon as my 110 Uriah has been converted to a 200TDI diesel I will commence the planning myself. In the meantime don't hold your breath folks!

Dick's decided that after he did all the planning for Poland 2003 we need to delegate some responsibilties to other team members.  I've taken the unofficial role of 'Project Leader', ahem, and DT's been handed the responsibility of start dates and durations.  I'm guessing that there's more to that than initally meets the eye.  We'll see.  I'm responsible for sorting out a 200TDI diesel conversion for Uriah, the thirsty 110.  I've no doubt I'll also be responsible for the routes and overnight stops on both outbound and inbound journeys (I'm determined to get a stay in Brussels to see the ol' DHL boys again).  I've also taken it upon myself to organise other interested parties to come.  So, if any of you out there fancy a trip to Romania this year then drop us a line using the 'contact' link at the top right of this page.

I've just looked at an article on the AA website about motoring in Romania and it's definitely not as easy as when we all raced around Poland.  Here's the main points that I see will cause us headaches...

  • Any damage to the vehicles has to be declared upon entry into the country.  Any damage incurred whilst in the country has to be accompanied by the relevant documentation, presuambly issued by the Police.  A bit hard if you're halfway up a mountain and hit a tree!
  • You can enter the country with full fuel tanks but they must be empty upon leaving - otherwise tax must be paid on the fuel.  So where's my cheap fuel perks then?
  • LPG is NOT widely available in the country.
  • Credit cards are not widely accepted in fuel stations.
  • A road tax must be paid by foreign travellers in a post office.

So it seems that a visit to Romania is not a straight forward thing to achieve!  When we went to Poland there was none of this malarky.  Through the border, no road tax, petrol stations took credit cards, more LPG stations than normal petrol stations and no damage checks!  It makes me wonder, as the roads are supposed to be in such a poor state of repair, maybe the Romania highways authority is relying on Foreign Vehicle Road Tax to pay for the 'upgrade' of the road network?

So, remind me again, why are we travelling to Romania?
